May Board Meeting
The Board met with the Muscatine County Zoning Commission. After a tour of our facility and much discussion the Commission unanimously approved a motion to recommend to Muscatine County Board of Supervisors to allow our request to rebuild the indoor range. A meeting with Muscatine County Board of Supervisors has been scheduled for June 3rd.
The Board has been working with the City of West Liberty to establish amicable provisions with our lease prior to rebuilding our clubhouse. Greg Kindl will be meeting with the building inspector to keep the process moving
Some members expressed concern over lack of information and newsletters. Arnie Hart offered to help out with forming and editing the monthly newsletter with input from the Board and shooting groups within the club.
The wet weather has increased the need for Lawn mowing at more regular intervals, and some areas have not been mowed yet this year. Jim Amlong has agreed to bring his tractor over and mow on a more regular basis.
After the May flooding in West Liberty the pistol bay road was damaged and there debris has been deposited all around the range which needs to be cleaned up. Greg is trying to organize a clean-up day of these items and will rent a skid loader to help in this project. Doc Stock also advised the need to spray for weeds in pistol bays
Member Dave Cacciolli inquired about purchasing a new American Flag to replace burnt up flag.
Dave will contact American Legion for purchase of a new flag

Governor Recognizes the West Liberty Gun Club
WLGC was nominated and won a 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award for 25 years of providing facilities and instructors for Iowa Hunter Education programs. The club was nominated by Tom Campbell of the Iowa DNR.
The Office of Iowa Governor Terry Branstad announced on April 23, 2013 The West Liberty Gun Club of West Liberty has been awarded a 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Award.
This award comes via the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and is in recognition of 25 years of service in providing facilities and instruction for the Iowa Hunter Education Program. In an award letter to the club, Governor Branstad stated, “We are pleased to honor those who have given the precious gift of their time to make a difference and enrich lives all across Iowa.” The award will be presented by Governor Branstad to West Liberty Gun Club President David Kelzenberg and other honorees in a special ceremony to be held on June 12 in Marion.
Kelzenberg stated, “We are very pleased to be recognized and honored by the Governor in this way. The West Liberty Gun Club has always been a strong proponent of the safe handling and use of firearms. Our mission has always included the instruction of our youth in the safe handling of firearms, through programs such as 4-H, scouts, our own youth shooting programs, and of course Iowa’s Hunter Safety Education Program. And this recognition comes at a crucial time as we struggle with the challenges of reconstructing our primary facility.” The club’s indoor shooting range and clubhouse were destroyed by a major fire in January, and efforts to rebuild this facility are on hold as they attempt to negotiate a complicated path through the bureaucracies of the city of West Liberty and Muscatine County, where the club is located. “We plan to rebuild our facility, and to continue our mission of providing a safe and supportive venue for firearms instruction and participation in the shooting sports,” Kelzenberg said.
If you should see Tom Campbell of the Iowa DNR out and about in your comings and goings be sure to thank him for caring enough about the WLGC to submit us for this prestigious award
Fire Clean-up crew
Thanks to all of you who were able to stop out and help get the clean-up started. With over 20 volunteers the work went well and we have a great start on the clean-up process. Over $2200 was raised from redemption of scrap metal. We will likely have another clean-up day in the near future to complete clean-up on the inside and then pick-up all of the debris on the outside as well. Thanks again to all who made it out, and some on multiple days:
I apologize if I missed anyone; your service is greatly appreciated!
West Liberty Practical Shooters
Congratulat ions to WLGC club members Steve Yeater and Bruce Guither for their recent trip to the Single Stack Nationals held in Barry, IL. Steve and Bruce finished respectively amongst some of the top shooters in the sport. Thanks for representing not only WLGC but also the state of Iowa at the national level.
The spring weather has been challenging but the practical shooters have been hosting matches on the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s of every month. The first Sunday of each month is our USPSA sanctioned match and has a typical round count of 125 to 180 rounds. The third Sunday of each month has hosted Steel Challenge type static steel, and will now be transitioning in to 3 gun matches. We welcome any and all participants and/or spectators. If you have seen some of these events on TV or even just wanting to improve your practical shooting skills feel free to join us at any of our events or you can email Greg at Greg.email@example.com for more info.
WLGC will once again be the host site for the Big Dawg Steel Match July 25th-27th. This match is literally a blast. It is guaranteed not to disappoint with 15 stages of falling steel plate racks and a round count of 300 rounds (if you don’t miss). This match is a ton of fun and we are once again proud to be the host site for the match. The match draws over 100 competitors from all across the country. The 2012 prize table had over $11,000.00 in prizes, everyone walked away with a prize. You can find additional match info & registration forms at www.bigdogsteelmatch.com.
The 2nd Annual Iowa Fall Classic will be held at WLGC September 5th – 8th and we have been working hard to make this an even better match than last year’s match. Last year’s inaugural event saw over 50 competitors from a several state area. This event is our USPSA flagship event and we hope to grow the event this year. Match planning is under way and more details will be coming soon. We are in need of Range officers to work the match. Range officers will be offered a compensation package for their time. If you are interested in being Iowa Fall Classic staff, contact Greg @ firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also if you would like to help with match, planning, set-up, or function please contact Greg
Hello Shooters, 6/2/13
Sunday started off a little cool, but Mother Nature was smiling on us for what ended up a great day shooting. We had great turn out with 43 competitors. We had some old friends come to visit as well as some new shooters for the match. Thanks to all who made it out to shoot with us. The match results have been posted to the USPSA web site and can be found here or by entering club code IA10 and clicking on the 6/2/13 match date on the results tab. I apologize as some of you may have received a couple emails with match results, I am a little rusty. In Ryan’s absence I had to correct some errors I made in the scoring. A very big THANK YOU to the set-up crew on Saturday and all who stuck around to help tear down on Sunday, your efforts are greatly appreciated and go a long way in making these matches a success. I have attached a copy of the overall results for your reference.
You guys asked for it, so were going to make it happen. Yes that’s right 3 Gun competition is coming to West Liberty Gun Club. West Liberty practical shooters will be hosting our very first # gun match next Sunday, June 16th. We will have 5 stages of 3 gun with a final round count of 52 Rifle, 95 Pistol, & 37 Shotgun (Bird shot only 7 1/2, 8 or 9). We will be using the current USPSA Multi-gun Rules which can be downloaded here. Scoring for the match will be the standard hit factor USPSA scoring. Set-up for Sunday’s match will be at 8:30 am on Saturday. If you can spare a few hours to help set-up, it will be much appreciated not to mention you get to preview the stages. Final match set-up will be 7:30 Sunday morning with registration beginning at 8:15. Shooters meeting will be at 8:50 and first shots at 9:00am.
We WILL be including in the match an additional pistol only course of fire that will be 40 rounds. Final round count will now be 52 Rifle, 135 Pistol, and 37 pistol. Two of the six courses will be pistol only, one stage will be pistol and shotgun, and 3 stages will use rifle, pistol, and shotgun in the same stage. this should be a ton of fun. Come celebrate father’s day morning at the range with us.
