Hello club members! it’s been a while since our last newsletter and a lot has happened at WLGC. I will try to hit the highlights as well as bring you up to speed on recent club events.
WLGC Mourns the Loss of One of it’s Own
Curtis Koele was known to many at the club as a leader, mentor, and a champion to the shooting sports. Curtis has made numerous contributions to the club, both large and small. He loved the club and was constantly looking for ways to improve it. Curtis served many roles on and off the board of directors, as a 4H leader and mentor, and most recently as the match director for NRA sanctioned air rifle matches. Curt worked hard on behalf of the NRA helping to sponsor and promote the Friends of the NRA Banquet and was an avid supporter of our 2nd Amendment Rights.
Plans for a club memorial event are pending due to recent events. More information will be passed on when it becomes available.
West Liberty Practical Shooters
WLPS completes it’s first year as a USPSA Club
In January 2012 the West Liberty Practical became the newest United Sates Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) club in the state. The group hosted 13 USPSA sanctioned matches and 10 steel/fun matches in 2012. In July, the club helped host the Big Dawg Steel match that drew over 100 competitors over a 3 day competition schedule. In September, the group hosted the inaugural Iowa Fall Classic. The Fall Classic hosted over 60 competitors from multiple states over a 2 day competition schedule. We finished the year with the 2nd highest number of competitors among all clubs in Iowa. The practical shooters hold matches on the first and third Sundays of the month. If you have seen practical shooting matches on TV and are curious, we invite you to stop on out and visit or even shoot with us. For further information contact Greg Kindl at Greg.Kindl@gmail.com.
December 16th 2012
In what is becoming an annual holiday tradition,WLGC hosted its final ladies match for the season.
The Pre-Christmas 900 had six contestants, who enjoyed a potluck luncheon, and a chance to visit with friends. Ray and Rosie Dietrich and Kathy Hundoble came to lunch and visit. Always great to see them at our Ladies events. On the line we had Isabele a new shooter with the club, this was her first Bullseye match, who did great with a borrowed .22. Mehgin Hundoble, Pat Correll, and Marlo Laing with her daughters Tracy and Tonia. Good to see them back and shooting again. When the final shot was made and the total tallied Mehgin took 1st, followed closely by new shooter Isabele, Marlo snagged third.
As always these matches are only made possible by the support of the volunteers. Big round of applause and thanks to our President Dave Kelzenberg, Dave Caccoli and Mike Laing. On that note Merry Christmas to all the members of WLGC
Fire Destroys Clubhouse
Disaster strikes at WLGC
As many of you know or have heard a fire has damaged the Clubhouse and indoor range on the afternoon of Monday, January 21st. Two club members arrived at the club to use the indoor facilities around 3:00pm. Upon their arrival they detected heavy smoke inside the clubhouse, they immediately contacted 911 and club emergency personnel. Firefighters from West Liberty, West Branch, and Atalissa responded to the fire. Unfortunately the structure and all of its contents were severely damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and as of last the source was unknown. Due to the continuing investigation and safety threats the club has been closed to ALL members, visitors and shooting activities since the fire. Efforts to procure the safety of club members, visitors, and competitors are underway and we hope to have the outdoor ranges back open to member use again very shortly.
A look inside after the fire
WLGC Moving Forward
Rebuilding WLGC Facilities
At the regularly scheduled January Board of Directors meeting on January 23rd the focus was heavy on the recent fire. It was good to see board members past and present, friends, and shooters alike all show up to offer support to aid in the rebuilding process. The overwhelming response was to rebuild the clubhouse and restore WLGC to its pre-fire status. Many great ideas and generous offers were extended.
So where do we go from here?
The fire investigators and insurance adjusters are expected to finish their investigation sometime this week or early next week. Three committee’s have been formed to help pool resources, collective knowledge, and distribute the workload. The committee’s are Site Clean-up and Demolition, Finance and Fundraising, and Building Planning and Construction. The committee’s are already hard at work planning and you will undoubtedly see more from each of these groups in the future.
After we get the all clear from the insurance company, the first steps will be to clean-up the site and remove the debris. The clean-up committee’s top priority is to return the outdoor facilities to use as soon as possible. As you can imagine, some of the fire debris has landed outside the building and needs to be cleaned up before we can re-open the outdoor ranges.
The Fundraising committee has already been hard at work and we are asking all of our members for fundraising ideas so that we can compile options and make an action plan. While many of you may connections and great ideas we ask that you present ideas and contacts to the committee to maximize our efforts and present a uniformed message. The fundraising committee members are: David Kelzenberg, Brad Reiners, Tomasz Korwel, Bruce Guither, Greg Kindl, Patricia Kindl. Please send all ideas to WLgunclub@gmail.com.
Our members are the clubs greatest resource and we will be asking you for your help in this rebuilding process. Whether it’s volunteer work, donations and contributions, or even just bringing lunch on a work day there is a part to be filled by everyone.
A word from our treasurer
As a result of the fire some renewal and new member forms were destroyed. If you renewed your membership at the club or dropped off your member forms to the club between January 6th and January 21st please contact club treasurer Patricia Kindl by email at Patricia_Kindl@msn.com. We want to make sure that all membership renewals are processed and updated.
